Hi Everyone

This is a plea for prayers for my sister. She had a bicycle accident yesterday and is currently in ICU.

She broke her jaw in 2 places, her wrist, her fingers on right hand, dislocated her shoulder and has abrasions all over. She had a tracheotomy last night to assist with breathing and has a feeding tube as her jaw is wired shut. Vanessa is awake and able to communicate (via writing) with everyone so I can only assume that there is no major nerve/neck/brain damage. She is in a hospital in Cape Town - very far away from Johannesburg and I cannot get there. Mostly financial reasons, and also, there would be nothing for me to do but sit around in the hospital. I cannot imagine the pain she is in, nor the pain she was in for 2 hours holding her jaw together while waiting for the ambulance! It makes me sick to my stomach to think about that.

So now we just have to wait..... wait for the swelling to go down and hope that will not reveal any further damage or complications, hope and pray she doesn't get any infections, septicemia or pneumonia. The waiting is the hard part. Being so far away is even harder! But I am grateful this didn't happen while she was still overseas. I am grateful that, at this stage, there is nothing life-threatening.

Today I am not coping with it all.

Please keep her in your prayers.

Thank you

Staying Positive (trying very hard to)

Dear Kazmut

I am very sorry to hear that your dear sister had a bicycle accident. I feel for you both.

I will be thinking of the both of you. Please update us soon.  Perhaps you can send her cards as I am sure the ICU nurses will deliver them to her.  Even if she knows about them for a brief moment it will surely help.

Sending you lots of love and prayers.

Thanks for the update. It's wonderful that she has been well enough to have the tracheotomy tube removed and soon come out of the ICU. I once had an almost fourth month stay in the ICU and had to have a tracheotomy tube as well as I was recovering from my transplant surgery, so this makes me especially happy for her as I remember my own joy in being released from the ICU and being able to breathe on my own. I hope she may continue to gain more strength and be healed more and more each day. I will continue to keep you both in my thoughts and prayers. Many hugs and best of wishes.

hi Everyone, Thank you for your kind words and prayers! Vanessa is doing much better. She is able to write with her right hand so looks like no serious nerve damage there. They took out the tracheotomy tube on Saturday as she had been breathing on her own the whole day and she is able to talk now. They are probably moving her out of ICU today so hopefully she will have her cell with her and we will be able to text each other. I can imagine its not easy talking with your jaw wired shut!!

Thanks again, I really appreciate the thoughts and prayers. Long road of recovery ahead, but we will over come this and each hurdle we face.
