My transplanted kidney failed over the holidays. I am now doing dialysis 3 times a week.  My kidney lasted 11 1/2 years, now I have to make some decisions. I am not sure what to do. I don't know whether to do home hemo, PD, or clinic hemo while I get myself back on the transplant list.

I decided to get both a fistula and a PD cathader. I have been having a bad reaction to the hemo dialysis in the form of migraine headaches. That makes my decision to go with the PD dialysis a lot easier. Every time I did hemo dialysis I would start getting a massive headache 15 minutes after starting dialysis. I hope to start PD dialysis this week, because the headaches are killing me. They hurt so bad that I have to come home from the clinic and go to bed for several hours to get rid of them.

I am sorry to hear your kidney failed. I think you have to do what is best for your life style and health. I know I didn't want to do home hemo because I had a young daughter, two cats and a husband that traveled. It worked out better for me to go to the center. Plus on a mental level for me it was better to have dialysis outside my house, because I felt if I brought it in my home then it would be part of my home life. My home is my comfort zone. However this seemed to work well for others. I think you have to do what is right for you. I hope you dont have to wait long for a transplant. Wishing you the best.

I am leaning toward doing home hemo while I get back on the transplant list. I think PD doesn't clean the toxins out as well. I also want to check on taking vacations with each different type of dialysis. To see which one would be the easiest.
