My fiance and I are going for his first vist with the transplant team on August 16th. The letter we received states the meeting will last from 3-6 hrs. Can anyone tell me what to expect for this…Continue

Fiance and I met with the transplant team at Hershey Med on August 16th. Was not as bad as what I had expected it was going to be but yet it was in ways. We met the head transplant liver surgeon and was told that we can not be placed on the transplant list just yet. Donald'd BMI right now is a 46 and they only list patients that are a BMI of 40 or lower. They told us if he would have come to the clinic this time last year they would have turned him away due to his BMI right away so we are…See More

Rita said… - Hi, they present a lot of information on what to expect throughout the process. From drugs, to medical stuff, to insurance. I took notes because that is what I am good at and I also brought my husband and sister-in-law with me so there where other people to ask questions I did not think of and to listen when I might have missed something. Plus the loving support was nice to have family members there. Wishing you the best. Rita

- oops..I spelled it wrong..ascites is the accumulation of fluid in the abdomen(peritoneal) as liver disease progresses. the meds he is on hopefully will abate that. do you know what his meld score is?

- glad you liked the suggestion..keep your spirits up...and Donald too..Nothing is as bad as it first seems...just wait..you'll see!! To coin a phrase..."don't worry,be happy"...:-)) Is he on any meds yet?? Does he have acites?

- also start writing down questions you want to ask, because invariably, you will forget to ask something! You will probably meet with a financial advisor to explain the financial end of things.

- It took 3 weeks to get a new Liver..probably because of my blood type (A+) I was fortunate..and my meld score was high so I was on top of the list. You probably will meet with a transplant co-ordinator on your first visit and she/he will throw out a lot of info to you, plus pamphlets, and borchures. I would suggest you take a tape recorder with you so whe the conversation starts you will be able to record everything...because you'll have a hard time remembering everything they say to you.
