Hi   I am new to Transplant Friends. I am 61 yr old male, 9 years out with my kidney. I always got the flu shot, but this year I wonder if I should because they added the h1n1. Have any of you received the h1n1? How was your experience?

Hey Tut.. I had the H1N1 vaccine last year without incident. I found it no different than the yearly flu shot; (minor) tender spot where shot went in.. that's about it.. no other adverse reactions. Best, though, to discuss this with your doc come clinic time... All the best.
Thank-you for your response. The transplant coordinator and my nephrologist said take it, but no one ever gives follow up on what happens after you do take it. I really appreciate your response. It will make my decision easier. I have alot of tips I learned in my 9 years of transplant. I will share these another time, and hope others will share with me. Tut
I am also a 61 yr old male, 1 year and 10 months out with my second transplant (first in 2002). I had the H1N1 both last year and the flu shot this year which includes the H1N1. I had no side effects either year.

Good Luck,

Jim
Hi First Congrads on your transplant and glad to hear you a feeling good. I have gotten the shot every year since my transplant. Last year there was a big thing on the new and the debate about it. My transplant team gave me the shot last year with a number to call if I had problems and an id # of my particular shot. This year they gave me the shot with no card with the id # of the shot on it. If you have ever gotten the flu in your life where you got it bad I think that makes one get the shot when they offer it. I personally have never had a problem with the flu shot, although one should not get it if they know they are ill ( cold, sore throat etc), however before they give you the shot they ask if you have a cold. The only thing that has happened to me is a bit of a sore arm where the shot was given. No big deal with that. My advice is to get the shot but ask your transplant team or you doctor. Wishing you the best. Rita
I've had both for several years, including the combo shot this year.  No problems.  My docs told me to get the shots and also told me to have a pneumonia shot every 5 years.

I was told by my tx to make sure the H1n1 was NOT the live virus shot if you have had a transplant. Plus, to not be around anyone who has gotten one for a few days. Has anyone else heard of this as well? I do get my flu shot ever year but I have to make sure it is not the live one.
